A Change

I have a hair dilemma! For a while now, I've been wanting to chop some length off my blonde locks to make it more manageable. Fashionably, you see. I can't do super cute things with my hair. I can curl it, sure, but it falls flat in no time. And it takes forever, because my hair is also ridiculously thick. So, currently my hair is, eh.. it falls just below my boobs.
I don't know if that's any indicator of the length, but it's the best I can come up with. And no, my teeth are not gray. That's a tin-foil grill, though barely visible.

The picture kinda cuts my hair off off, but it doesn't go on too much longer. I want that chopped to just below shoulder-length. Some long layers, but no bangs. Maybe.

I'm asking for advice here. I have no idea what my hair would be like short, because the last time it was short was 10th grade. Over 4 years ago, people. And back then, I had no idea how to style hair. I still barely have an idea, but I'm better. I just want my hair to be more versatile. Sure, it's pretty and long now.. but it's boring. To me. I want a change!

Have you thought about dyeing it? Sometimes that's a nice change. I do nonpermanent every once in a while and I love it!

Cutting it short is a change, but sometimes having short hair requires MORE time fixing it and stuff. I recently cut mine and I'm still not sure if I like it all that much.

That Reese Witherspoon pic you showed me would be a great style for you. And admit it, you DO have similar features to her!

I had very long hair and then cut it to a bob. I loved the bob, but everyday would miss my long hair and how easy it was to put up in a ponytail, etc. I liked to do a lot with my hair, so I'm not sure if you'd miss it, but I def. did. I think layers would suit your face very well and then you could still keep the length, because your hair is so pretty I'd hate to see it all go.

Haha - same kind of dilemma on my end. Firstly, I'm just getting people to vote for whether I should cut my hair at all. Later comes the fun part of actually having to pick a style.

I remember having short hair though (about 10 years ago I think) and remember it being a pain to maintain.

I like how you look with long hair so I totally agree with Heather - play around with layers.

I had hair past my boobs once... and I chopped it off and gave it away to Locks of Love. Twice. It's a REALLY great thing to do, it helps cancer patients who have lost their hair, and my hair is really thick.. it's a RELIEF to go from long hair to short. I think you should try it out!

I think our hair is exactly the same! My hair is long and I can barely do anything with it. When I curl my hair it ends up going flat in like an hour. It's really long, but I'm scared to cut it short again. I need to change my hair too! So I can't give you any advice, since I am lost too.

So not only are WE alot alike, but so is our hair! :)

I had this SAME dilemma this summer. My hair came down right to where yours is and I felt like it just looked straight and boring and I went and chopped off 4 inches. I missed having my long hair so much. I would say if you want variety but really love your long hair, keep it long and use Redken Spray Starch 15 on your curls and that will make them stay. But I'm sure you will be beautiful with whatever style you choose! Good luck!

Hmmm...you have beautiful hair! However as one who normally has hair past her boobs I am all for going shorter!

I alternate with my locks..since my hair grows freakishly fast I will chop it off to just past my shoulders with some layers and then grow it back out. Then I repeat the cycle!

I am all for new things so I say go short!

I say cut it to your shoulders but maybe angle it so its a little shorter in the back and add a few layers. The best bet though is to trust your hairstylist. Go in and tell them you kind of want a change but aren't sure what would work best with your hair. That's what I do and I always love it! You don't go to a mechanic and tell them how to fix your car.

When I chopped my hair I was depressed for the next year, haha. But some people find it really liberating! Now is a perfect time in your life to try new things!

P.S. I'm glad you found me on 20SB!

Go to InStyle and do a free hair makeover. This will give you some idea of what shorter hair will look like.
I did this last hair cut and it came out good :)

Thank you guys so much for the advice! I'm still undecided.. but I've got some time to figure it out.
Sara- I haven't thought about dyeing it. I'm kinda terrified to add any color to my hair, even temporary. I don't want to mess with it, because even though this sounds conceited, my color is beautiful!

I'll be sure to let everyone know if I decide to get it cut! I've just had it long for 4 years. Change would be nice :)

Cutting it can be scary! I had it super long once and now I love it short! It's easier to deal with but sometimes I miss being able to braid it... Wishing you luck on the choice!

I don't know what kind of hair you have, but someone up there said long layers and bangs. I think that's a good idea, because long layers are easy to dry and style and if you have light, whispy bangs, you could either wear them straight or do the sassy sideswept thing.

I recognize the gravity of your situation for I'm a giant snob about my hair. I wish you luck in your decision!

Speaking as a representative of the follically-challenged, I'd say that as long as you're sure it'll grow back, go ahead and take a chance.

But then, what the hell do I know?

Beautiful hair! I recently cut mine to just below shoulder length and it definitely has more body and holds curl longer. When it's as long as yours (and mine WAS), it's too heavy and it pulls all the curls out. I say slightly shorter but with some layers to give it some fullness.

Maybe start out with a few layers, nothing drastic and then make bigger changes if you feel the need. Your hair is lovely already. Thanks for visiting my blog. :)
