So It Gets Kinda Personal

I'm a 20 year old girl who has been going to college for the past two years to get into the nursing program.

I'm also a very indecisive 20 year old girl who has never been sure this is what I'm meant to do.

I guess I've always thought.. you should know what you're meant to do with your life. Do I think I'd enjoy nursing? Sure.. for a while. But I don't think I'd want to make it my career.

This didn't just spring onto me one day. I've been thinking about it probably for the past six months. But something did spring on me. It was when my mom said to me.. "You know, I always pictured you as an elementary school teacher."

The truth is, I think I've always thought the same. I've at least always thought I should be a teacher. I'm pretty sure I couldn't handle high schoolers, and don't want to deal with the puberty ridden middle schoolers.. so why not elementary school? First.. possibly second grade.

I think that sounds like an excellent plan. And it feels like I've finally found what I want to do with my life. I want to be an unappreciated, underpaid teacher. I really do.

That's great! I've always wanted to teach- even if it isn't the highest paying job, it's SO rewarding! :D

Congratulations!

You seem to really have a good attitude for it. I fondly remember my 2nd grade teacher to this day. I bet you will have a lot of kids growing up pointed in the right direction, and looking back fondly on your class and example!

It may not pay much, but it is a beautiful thing to do! Inspiring kids to learn would be amazing!

Hi Kellie! Do what you really love to do... if you want to be a teacher and you know that you will love teaching kids, then go for it. I always say that no matter how hard or under-rated a job is, if you enjoy doing it, then it won't feel like work for you.

That's so awesome! I went through almost the exact same thing as you last summer, and I decided upon the same thing! Unfortunately, (or fortunately?) I've since then changed my mind, but I definitely thing somewhere on down the line I want to become a teacher.

PS, if you haven't looked into them already, TeachAmerica and Teach NOLA are two really amazing programs. I have friends doing both right now!

I went through my entire college career not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. I was an English major and was dead set against being a teacher. Then after I graduated I started teaching and fell in love with it.

If you want to get some experience, try subsitute teaching over the summer or if you're adventerous, you can sign up for a program that allows you to travel to other countries to teach young children.

I second the wise person above me that said try subbing. In my district you just need 48 college credits to start subbing. You get paid more with actual teaching certification though.I thought I wanted to be a history teacher until I realized I hated the secondary grades. I'm much happier with elementary school.

Although, I must say you'd probably be more likely getting a job in nursing right now. At least where I live, it seems you need to sub for a few years before an actual teaching position opens up. I think it's definitely worth it.

P.S. I always thought I'd like 1st and 2nd grade the most too. Turns out 3rd, 4th, and 5th are more my liking. The younger grades are exhausting. Fun, but exhausting.

I think it is amazing that you have found what you really want to do!
It makes me so happy!

I realized what I actually wanted to do this year, and it made life so much easier. Even though I am spending this year trapped in the wrong major, I can't wait to get started doing what I love!

This post makes me SO happy! I am so glad that you're finding a path in life--it is so important. Teaching is really rewarding. I'm getting certified, too, because it is such a great profession!

2nd grade is like, the best year, too. Duh.

I spent 18 years wanting to be a pediatrician, until I went to college and discovered environmental science. The moment you realize your life is going down a different path is so scary but makes you feel weightless. just keep listening to your intuition :)
